What Is Gastroenterology?
Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine concerned with diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the digestive system. This covers the oesophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, gallbladder and pancreas.
At Narangba Station Health, we specialise in providing patients with common and complex GI complaints with the highest standard of evidence-based care.

We also provide lifestyle and nutritional advice, along with preventative care, to keep your digestive system healthy.
Conditions We Diagnose and Treat
Our gastroenterology specialists diagnose and manage a broad spectrum of digestive health conditions, including:
Common Digestive Disorders
The most frequent digestive conditions we treat include gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (acid reflux), persistent heartburn and reflux symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or symptoms related to IBS like chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits.
We also routinely assess and treat digestive problems such as constipation and diarrhea linked to diet, stress, or gut problems, plus peptic ulcer disease and food intolerances.
Inflammatory & Autoimmune Conditions
When the immune system triggers inflammation that affects the digestive tract, various symptoms can occur. Conditions like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis can result in chronic inflammation to different areas of the digestive tract, leading to abdominal pain, fatigue and changes in bowel habits.
Celiac disease is another immune condition where the body has difficulty tolerating gluten. Left untreated, this can affect the small intestine and your body’s ability to absorb nutrients.
Liver, Pancreas & Biliary Disorders
In addition to the organs of the digestive tract, conditions can also affect your liver, pancreas and gallbladder. These organs support nutrient metabolism and digestion, so conditions like hepatitis or fatty liver disease, pancreatitis and gallstones or bile duct blockage can cause health concerns. Some of these conditions may cause abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue or digestive discomfort and will usually require monitoring or treatment.
Cancer Screening & Prevention
Preventative care is also important for maintaining your long-term digestive health. Screening for colorectal cancer allows doctors to check for any changes or abnormalities in your bowel before you experience symptoms. This can include removing polyps, which are small growths on the intestinal wall that could become cancerous over time. If you are at higher risk for colorectal cancer, your doctor can also recommend surveillance options.
Endoscopic procedures
Laboratory & imaging tests
Diagnostic Services
Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment. In some cases, a closer look inside the digestive tract is needed to understand what’s causing your symptoms.
Our clinic offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests, including:
Endoscopic Procedure
Endoscopic procedures use a small camera to examine the digestive tract and help diagnose a range of gastrointestinal conditions. If your symptoms require further investigation, we can arrange the appropriate endoscopic testing and guide you through the next steps of your care.
These can include:
- Gastroscopy: A minimally invasive procedure to visualise the oesophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine.
- Colonoscopy: A vital screening tool for colorectal cancer and bowel disease, allowing direct examination of the colon and rectum.
- Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: A focused examination of the lower colon for quick assessment of symptoms.
Laboratory & Imaging Tests
At Narangba Station Health Centre, if needed, we can arrange or conduct the appropriate diagnostic tests to better understand your symptoms and guide the right treatment.
These include:
- Stool Analysis
- pylori Breath Test
- Liver Function Tests
- Ultrasound & Advanced Imaging Referrals
All diagnostic procedures are conducted with strict safety protocols and patient comfort in mind.

Preparing for Your Appointment
Taking a few minutes to jot down some notes before your visit can go a long way. Make a list of medications and supplements you take, and write down notes about your symptoms — when they began and when they happen.
If you’ve had digestive health tests or treatments in the past, bring those records to help your doctor determine your medical history. It also may help to write down questions you want to ask or concerns you want to address so you don’t forget them at your appointment.
1. List your medications
2. Note your symptoms
Record when symptoms started, how often they occur, and any patterns or triggers you’ve noticed.
3. Bring past records
4. Write down your questions
Prepare a list of questions or concerns ahead of time so you don’t forget them during your consultation.
Fees & Medicare Rebate
We’re a mixed billing practice and a partial Medicare rebate will be available for Medicare cardholders. The fees outlined are strictly for your consultation. Additional fees may apply for any treatments or scripts as recommended by your doctor.

FAQs
What symptoms should prompt a gastroenterology consultation?
Persistent abdominal pain, chronic heartburn, unexplained weight loss, blood in your stool, drastic changes in bowel habits, or jaundice are all signs that you should get evaluated by a specialist.
Is a colonoscopy painful?
Most patients are sedated for a colonoscopy, so you should not feel anything during the procedure. We will do everything we can to keep you safe and comfortable.
How do I prepare for an endoscopy or colonoscopy?
Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for your procedure, including fasting or doing a bowel prep when necessary.
Do I need a referral to see a gastroenterologist?
Although you may need a referral from your GP for continuity of clinical information and insurance purposes, please call us and we will guide you through next steps.
