What is an Iron Infusion?

An iron infusion involves iron being given directly into a vein via a small IV drip. This means the iron goes directly into your bloodstream and is absorbed faster than tablets.

Iron infusions may be recommended if tablets aren’t working well for you, you don’t tolerate them well or you need quicker improvement. Severe tiredness, persistent symptoms or certain health conditions may also mean an iron infusion is advised.

Compared to oral supplements, intravenous iron therapy can help restore iron levels more efficiently, so you can start to notice an improvement in your energy and overall well-being sooner.

Symptoms of Low Iron

Iron deficiency can develop gradually, and many people don’t realise their symptoms are related to low iron.

You may benefit from iron deficiency treatment in Narangba if you’re experiencing:

SymptomWhat It May Indicate
Ongoing Fatigue or Low EnergyReduced oxygen delivered due to low haemoglobin.
Dizziness or Light-HeadednessLow iron affecting circulation and oxygen levels.
Shortness of BreathReduced red blood cell function.
Pale Skin or Brittle NailsCommon physical signs of deficiency.
Headaches or Brain FogReduced oxygen supply to the brain.
Cold Hands and FeetCirculatory changes linked to low iron.

If these symptoms sound familiar, a simple blood test can confirm whether treatment for iron deficiency anaemia is needed.

Who May Need an Iron Infusion?

Iron infusions are not always the first step — but they are often recommended when other treatments haven’t worked or aren’t suitable.

You may be a good candidate if:

  • Oral iron supplements are not working.
  • You experience side effects from tablets.
  • You need a fast iron boost.
  • You have a condition affecting iron absorption.
  • You are pregnant (typically in later stages, as advised by your doctor).

Our GPs will assess your individual situation to ensure this is the right treatment for you.

Our Approach to Iron Deficiency Treatment

At Narangba Station Health Centre we know treating your low iron isn’t as simple as administering iron infusions. The reason you have low iron is important and we take the time to assess this with you.

Partnering with you for long-term management is important. Whether this be ongoing iron infusions, monitoring or referring you back to your regular GP for continued care, we will arrange follow-up when required.

Providing safe and effective iron infusion treatment tailored to you throughout Brisbane’s northside is what we do best. Get your energy levels back up and start feeling like you again.

When Should You Book a Hearing Test?

Gradual hearing loss is one of the reasons why hearing changes can be easily missed. You may wish to schedule a hearing appointment in Narangba if you’ve found yourself having trouble keeping up with conversations at work or social gatherings. Another indicator may be if you frequently have to ask others to repeat themselves.

Other signs include ringing or buzzing noises in your ears (tinnitus), needing to turn up the volume louder than before, or a feeling of sounds being muffled. Patients also commonly report feelings of pressure in the ears, dizziness or problems with balance.

If you think something just isn’t right, get it checked. An early diagnosis can go a long way to providing more treatment options and improving your future hearing health.

Conductive Hearing Loss

Conductive hearing loss can occur due to anything that inhibits sound from reaching your inner ear. This includes any obstruction of your ear canal or your middle ear. Earwax buildup, middle ear fluid, a ruptured eardrum, or damaged ear bones are among the most common causes of conductive hearing loss.

Low-volume hearing or hearing things as if they’re muffled are the primary symptoms associated with conductive hearing loss. Conductive loss is usually temporary and can often be treated with medical or surgical intervention. In some cases, you may be fitted with a bone conduction device.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss is the most prevalent form of hearing loss. It occurs when there is damage to either the inner ear (cochlea) or the hearing nerve. Sensorineural hearing loss can occur due to aging (Presbycusis), loud noise exposure, head trauma, or exposure to medications that damage the hearing system (OTC).

Symptoms may include low volume or clarity of sound, difficulty understanding speech (particularly when background noise is present), or sounds being distorted. Due to sensorineural hearing loss usually being permanent, treatment involves either hearing aids or cochlear implants to amplify sound.

Mixed Hearing Loss

Mixed hearing loss has attributes of both conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss, as its name implies. Individuals with mixed hearing loss experience problems in both the outer or middle ear and the inner ear or auditory nerve. For instance, you may have sensorineural hearing loss from aging, while also experiencing conductive hearing loss due to wax build-up or an ear infection.

Treatment for mixed hearing loss consists of medical or surgical treatment for the conductive loss along with hearing aids or amplifiers for the sensorineural loss.

Other Hearing Issues

Keep in mind there are other conditions that can affect your hearing health as well. Tinnitus or ringing in your ears and hyperacusis or a heightened sensitivity to sound are two conditions that impact some people’s hearing health.

Tinnitus can come and go or may be permanent depending on the cause. There are different treatments or therapies as well as sound masking devices that can help manage Tinnitus. Hyperacusis is usually managed with therapy and wearing hearing protection devices.

Fees & Medicare Rebates

The fees for iron infusion vary based on when you book your appointment and your specific treatment requirements. Patients attending Narangba Station Health Centre will be charged a consultation fee along with a treatment fee for the infusion. If you qualify for a Medicare rebate, we’ll process it for you during your appointment, circumstances permitting.

Weekend and after-hours appointments may be charged at a slightly higher rate to cover the costs of keeping the clinic open. We always discuss fees with you prior to your appointment so you know what costs to expect. For a detailed overview of all our practice fees, please visit our Fees page.

We make things easy by claiming your Medicare rebate for you at the time of your appointment. If we aren’t able to process this at the time of your visit, you will receive the rebate paid into your nominated account within 24 hours.

Untreated Hearing Loss

There are many physical and emotional consequences that can occur if your hearing loss goes untreated. It can be very frustrating not being able to communicate with your family and friends. Someone with hearing loss may feel lonely, isolated, or depressed.

Hearing loss that is left untreated can cause cognitive decline and dementia because you are not stimulating your brain with sound. Lower performance at your job and loss of productivity are also implications of leaving hearing loss untreated. By seeking help early, these can be avoided and you can live your life to the fullest.

If you are starting to experience symptoms of hearing loss such as muffled hearing, difficulty understanding speech, or ear pain, make sure to get your hearing checked by a professional. The sooner you diagnose and treat your hearing loss, the better you will hear and feel.

Untreated Hearing Loss

The cost of the iron medication itself (if necessary) may be additional to the cost of the procedure. The doctor will advise you if this is required and where it can be obtained. If you have any questions regarding fees or Medicare rebates please ask our friendly reception staff prior to booking your appointment.

Iron Infusion FAQs

Patients often see improved energy levels within a few days to weeks.

Iron infusions can be more effective for some patients, particularly if tablets aren’t working or cause unpleasant side effects. Speak to your GP about the best option for you.

Iron infusions are generally safe and side effects are rare. Some patients experience mild headaches, dizziness or nausea. Serious side effects are very rare and you will be monitored closely during the infusion.

This depends on your individual circumstances, including the underlying cause of your low iron levels. Some patients only need one infusion, while others require further treatment to manage their iron levels.

Yes, you can book an appointment to see one of our doctors directly. We also accept private referrals from other GPs.

The actual infusion takes around 30–45 minutes. We allow time for you to rest and be monitored after the infusion, so you’ll likely be at the hospital for around an hour in total.

Talk to your GP if you’re concerned about low iron levels. You might need an iron infusion if your GP advises that your iron levels are still low despite taking supplements, or you struggle to tolerate oral iron tablets.

Many patients are able to drive themselves home following an iron infusion, but if you’re feeling light-headed or unwell you should arrange for someone to drive you home.

Yes, your GP will normally ask for recent blood test results to confirm that you have low iron levels before prescribing an iron infusion.

Iron infusions can last for several months, or longer depending on the underlying cause of your low iron levels. Your doctor may recommend follow-up blood tests to monitor your levels.

If your iron levels are left too low for too long, you could develop iron deficiency anaemia. In the short term you may experience fatigue, difficulty concentrating and other symptoms of low iron.
